The agreement amount is $20,000 over the five (5) year term from July 1, 2021 thr ough June 30, 2026. Tobacco Use is the number one preventable cause of death and disease in Arizona. Cigarette smoking during pregnancy accounts for 20 – 30% of low birth weight babies, up to 14% of pre-term deliveries, and about 10% of all infant deaths. In 1995, as a result of the Tobacco Tax Initiative, the Arizona Legislatures authorized the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) to develop and fund tobacco prevention and cessation programs. The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) is funded by ADHS to identify effective strategies and implement school-based tobacco use prevention services for Maricopa County as part of the MCDPH comprehensive tobacco co ntrol program.
